Information Gain-based Exploration Using Rao-Blackwellized Particle Filters

چکیده
This paper presents an integrated approach to exploration, mapping, and localization. Our algorithm uses a highly efficient Rao-Blackwellized particle filter to represent the posterior about maps and poses. It applies a decision-theoretic framework which simultaneously considers the uncertainty in the map and in the pose of the vehicle to evaluate potential actions. Thereby, it trades off the cost of executing an action with the expected information gain and takes into account possible sensor measurements gathered along the path taken by the robot. We furthermore describe how to utilize the properties of the Rao-Blackwellization to efficiently compute the expected information gain. We present experimental results obtained in the real world and in simulation to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

A Novel Measure of Uncertainty for Mobile Robot SLAM with Rao - Blackwellized Particle Filters
Rao–Blackwellized particle filters (RBPFs) are an implementation of sequential Bayesian filtering that has been successfully applied to mobile robot simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) and exploration. Measuring the uncertainty of the distribution estimated by a RBPF is required for tasks such as information gain-guided exploration or detecting loop closures in nested loop environments...
متن کاملFast and accurate SLAM with Rao-Blackwellized particle filters
Rao-Blackwellized particle filters have become a popular tool to solve the simultaneous localization and mapping problem. This technique applies a particle filter in which each particle carries an individual map of the environment. Accordingly, a key issue is to reduce the number of particles and/or to make use of compact map representations. This paper presents an approximative but highly effi...
متن کاملMemory-Efficient Gridmaps in Rao-Blackwellized Particle Filters for SLAM using Sonar Range Sensors
Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM) has been an important field of research in the robotics community in recent years. A successful class of SLAM algorithms are Rao-Blackwellized Particle Filters (RBPF), where the particles approximate the pose belief distribution, while each particle contains a separate map. So far, RBPF with landmark based environment representations as well as gridm...

Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) is one of the classical problems in mobile robotics. The task is to build a map of the environment using on-board sensors while at the same time localizing the robot relative to this map. Rao-Blackwellized particle filters have emerged as a powerful technique for solving the SLAM problem in a wide variety of environments. It is a well-known fact for ...
متن کاملRao-Blackwellized particle filter for multiple target tracking
In this article we propose a new Rao-Blackwellized particle filtering based algorithm for tracking an unknown number of targets. The algorithm is based on formulating probabilistic stochastic process models for target states, data associations, and birth and death processes. The tracking of these stochastic processes is implemented using sequential Monte Carlo sampling or particle filtering, an...
